Door Frame Repair: Structural Integrity

A damaged door frame, or jamb, is a serious issue that can compromise your home's security and energy efficiency. Whether it's been split by a forced entry, damaged by pets, or has rotted from moisture, repairing the frame is essential for proper door operation. While extensive damage may require a full frame replacement, many common problems can be repaired.

💥 Problem: A Split Jamb (from Forced Entry)

This common type of damage can often be repaired without replacing the whole jamb.

1
Glue and Clamp: If the wood is just split, force high-quality wood glue deep into the crack. Use several bar clamps to squeeze the split jamb back together tightly. Wipe away any excess glue.
2
Reinforce with Screws: After the glue has dried, drill pilot holes and drive several long screws through the jamb and into the solid wall stud behind it for reinforcement.
3
Fill and Finish: Use wood filler to cover the screw heads and any remaining gaps. Once dry, sand the area smooth, then prime and paint to match.

💧 Problem: Rotted Door Jamb Bottoms

The bottom of exterior door frames are prone to rot from water splashing up from the ground.

🔪
Cut Out the Rot: Use an oscillating multi-tool or a handsaw to make a clean cut and remove the rotted section of the jamb.

Cut a Replacement Piece: Fashion a "dutchman" patch from a piece of solid or PVC lumber that is the exact size and shape of the section you removed.
🔩
Install the Patch: Apply wood glue or construction adhesive and secure the patch in place with trim screws. Fill, sand, and paint to finish.

For maximum security after a forced entry repair, consider installing a metal door frame reinforcement kit. This strengthens the entire jamb and makes it much more resistant to being kicked in.
