Fence Repair: Fixing Common Problems

A fence provides privacy, security, and curb appeal, but exposure to the elements means it will eventually need repairs. From a single broken board to a wobbly post, tackling these common fence problems promptly can prevent them from turning into a costly full replacement. Most minor fence repairs are well within the skills of a DIY homeowner.

🔧 Problem: Broken or Rotted Fence Boards/Pickets

This is one of the most common and easiest fence repairs.

Remove the Damaged Board: Use a pry bar and hammer to carefully remove the old board from the horizontal rails.

Get a Replacement: Take the old board to a lumberyard to find a matching one in the same size and wood type.

Cut to Length and Finish: Cut the new board to the correct length. If your fence is stained or painted, finish the new board to match before installation.

Install the New Board: Position the new board and use galvanized or stainless steel screws or nails to fasten it to the rails.

🧱 Problem: A Wobbly or Leaning Fence Post

A fence is only as strong as its posts. A wobbly post needs to be secured immediately.

For a Post in Dirt: If the post is just loose in the soil, you may be able to fix it by digging around the base, using a level to make the post plumb, and then tamping a mixture of gravel and dirt firmly around it. For a more permanent fix, pour new concrete into the hole.

For a Rotted Post: If the post has rotted at its base, it needs to be replaced. This is a bigger job that involves digging out the old concrete footing and setting a new post in fresh concrete.

🚪 Problem: A Sagging Gate

A gate that drags on the ground or won't latch properly is usually caused by loose hinges or the gate itself being out of square.

Fixing a Sagging Gate:

Tighten the Hinges: First, check and tighten all the screws on the gate hinges. If the screw holes are stripped, use longer screws or the toothpick-and-glue trick to fix them.
Add a Turnbuckle: You can fix a sagging gate by installing an anti-sag gate kit. This is a simple cable and turnbuckle system that runs diagonally across the gate. Tightening the turnbuckle pulls the gate back into a square shape.
